Speed and Agility Program
Marcel Pinto

This program focuses on the three stages of physical development.

1. Correct running technique.
2. Balance and coordination (ability to move smoothly from one movement to another).
3. Explosive strength (ability to apply your strength through dexterity and timing).

In soccer you’re constantly adapting your manner of running to the situation, since the environment itself is constantly changing during the game. Players are sometimes required to make short sprints to find space, or run 40 or more yards to support the play. As such, running 2 or 3 miles during a training session in a certain time at the same speed can give you some baseline stamina, but it is not specific to the demands of the game. Our soccer-specific program works on the following aspects that regularly occur in a typical soccer game:

  • The ability to change direction and move in small spaces without losing speed.
  • The ability to change stride length over long distances.
  • The ability to jump and land properly.
  • The ability to sprint and stop correctly.
  • The ability to anticipate and react to soccer situation

Exercises are performed using a variety of equipment, including speed ladders, hurdles, plyometric boxes, jump ropes, speed rings, resistance harnesses and medicine balls.
